Question:

How can jpg files look better on HDTV?

I took some pictures with my 7.1 megapixel digital camera. Each jpg file comes out to be around 2MB. When viewed on my 22 inch computer monitor, pictures look sharp and crisp. But when I burn the pictures on a DVD+W in a jpg format, they show up looking kind of funny...as if HDTV didn't know how to resize it or something...edges look kind of dotted.. Is there something I can do to make the pictures show up cleaner? Thanks!

  1. I suppose there's a third device you didn't mention. How do the pictures get from the DVD to HDTV?

Do you insert them in a regular DVD player? HD-DVD or Bluray? Upconverting DVD player?

If so, what kind of DVD player is it? Because that's very important! If your DVD player can talk to your TV in HD, and is capable of displaying JPEG files in HD format (some can, some can not) - and it is connected to the TV digitally (through HDMI, or even DVI cable) - you should get crisp and clear images.

If not, they will be shown in standard (SD) format, and that format is not very appropriate for looking at the pictures. It is just 720x480 pixels, and the modulation makes the near pixels blend together, so what you will see is a mess....

    Re: additional info:

Not sure which model of Philips DVD you have, but mine clearly states that it only upconverts when connected through HDMI cable, but not through component. Is your Philips upconverting? Does it have HDMI output? If so, get the cheapest HDMI cable you can find online (should fit within $10) and connect it that way. Don't get caught by $50+ cables at local electronics store. The $10 "cables to go" one is going to give you the same great picture quality as $75 Monster cable.

  2. do they come out in jpeg format from the camera. if not it may be that changing the file type is causeing it to lose attributes. if it comes in Jpeg it just looks funny because the pictures are just being blown up on a bigger screen
