  1. well unfortuantely gas is freaking expensive, you have food expenses, hotel costs and it all adds up. Use the most fuel efficient car you can, take as much food as you can with you, and maybe sleep in your car. Not much else you can do about it. Im assuming you have jobs so maybe put it off a little longer and save up more money or cut back on things you buy to save up for the trip.

  2. Honestly, it's probably cheaper to fly right now.  With enough searching and extreme flexibility you can get a good rate on any flight.  The only problem is you would have to rent a car once you arrive.

Of course, if you're just in it for "the journey" figure out who's car is most comfortable and gets the best mileage.  Run a cost estimate on the mileage by quickest distance, most likely on I-95, which comes to 2600 miles round trip.  That does not include driving around at your destination (add a couple hundred miles for that).  Divide the price for gas, food, and accommodation for a few nights by 4 and see if you can do it.  Miami, by the way, is expensive... so do your research.

I'll assume your group intends to go non-stop with four people in the car. Kinda dangerous choice, so be safe. I'd suggest finding a good stopping point halfway to check out on the way.  If you want to save money on hotels during the drive, there's always rest stops.  But stay only at one that says it has 24hr police surveillance.

  3. not going to happen.  have you SEEN the gas prices?  you have to pay for gas, hotels, food, etc.   the only thing that will make it cheaper is if you all 4 take turns driving, and you drive straight through.  it's about a 24 hour drive.
