how can moist air be less dense than dry air

  1. Water vapor is actually a lighter gas than O2 or N2!

  2. If the moist air is very hot and the dry air is very cold.

  3. Air and water density are both greatly affected by temperature.  Also air density is affected by pressure.

  4. Don't confuse density with weight.  They are two different things.

    Moisture takes up a certain amount of space in a given volume of air (more water molecules-less air molecules).  Remove the moisture and you have more air molecules in that given volume, therefore the air is denser.
