How can my puppy sleep on her basket? answer quick! i want to start tonight?

My dog Blossom is roughly 7 months now (she was born on the 2nd of January) And she has always slept on my bed or my mums and I now want her to sleep on her basket. Now I know I should have started that a long time ago, but there is no point telling me that now. So just tell me how I can get her to sleep on her basket-cushion. No point telling me what I SHOULD have done because it'll be no help now. Should I put her on lead and tie it to the banisters for the first few nights so she'll get used to it and won't just run into a room in the night? The hall light is on and its all ways warm and her cushion-basket is very comfy.

So... how should I get her to sleep on her basket?

Ps. My mums door can be easy pushed open, my kitchen has no door, i have no baby gates.

I was thinking about putting her basket in the spare room and slipping a a comb under the door. But I would have to tie her lead to something oon the opposite side of the room so she can't scratch. I will leave a ticking clock in the room and a lamp on.

The comb is so the door can't be pushed open ;)

  1. Gosh, you should've started that ages ago! Just kidding. Aw, I think your puppy will cry all night if you lock her away alone. It won't happen like magic. To get her to stop sleeping on your bed, just calmly put her on the floor when she gets up there. Make your bed and your mums bed places your puppy is not allowed. Hopefully once she's learnt this she'll look for somewhere else cosy, like her own bed! Just keep showing it to her.

  2. You can do what Carol said sounds like the best. I wouldn't recommend tieing her down to something cause if you're asleep and you're not supervising her than she cant strangle herself. I say if she scratches the door buy double sided sticky tape put it on the door or a balloon. Make sure if you want it done right have her tired so she wont have energy to bark, cry, etc... Hope this helps.

PS if she crying don't pay any mind cause if you do shes going to know how to get your attention and when you try to do it again the crying is only going to get louder.

  3. Well, you know what you should have done, so we won't go into that.

Try wearing an old jumper or shirt today - depending on the weather, wrap it around the cushion tonight and she might be alright with the comfort of your smell on the jumper or shirt.  This is what they usually do when people bring back puppies from their mother.  They rub the jumper all over the mother and that can calm a puppy in the first few days.

I am not sure about tying her up.  that could lead to nasty accidents and it would appear to the puppy that it is a punishment for he knows not what.  Try putting her basket somewhere away from your bedroom, downstairs if possible.  What about the sitting room?  Does that have a door?

You will have to be firm and also reward her when she does go to bed when told.  It should be a place of comfort, not a punishment.  One last thought leave a chew in her bed to find.

  4. you wont do it over night. start with her new bed next to your bed, with her favariot toy in and mabby a food treat. every time she gets out at night put her back in with an another food treat. and praze her when she goes in. do this every time she enters her basket. the she will assciate bed .....good...treat...nice...my place. this will take a little time an effort, but do it any other way your going to have a ot of crying noise and upset and proberly get nowhere any other way. all the best

  5. HMM This is a difficult one as the doggy woggy is set in its ways.

I would if i were you purchase some stairgates, i have two in the house.

These helps obviously to keep the dog out but it can still see you so wont be as distressing.

  6. Sounds like your headed in the right direction the only other thing you might do is get a creat and put her in it with the bed.

  7. I don't think you're going to make a ton of progress on this tonight, after 7 months of her being spoiled, so don't expect too much right away.

Why don't you look up crate training and go from there?

I really don't think you should leave your dog tied up in the other room.  That could be dangerous.  What if she hung herself on the leash somehow?

  8. You have asked this question 4 times already. Check your answers.

  9. You will find it easier to train the dog to sleep in the basket rather than on it.

  10. please please do not leave her tied without supervison i have personally seen the sad circumstances of this i have just retrained my spaniels it took over a week to stop the crying and there is 3 of them good luck

  11. this can't be done instantly as she is used to being with you. what you can do is start tonight by putting her blanket on your bed, then gradually over the next few days move her blanket from bed to basket on the floor at the side of your bed, then other side of room. keep doing this until you have moved her into her basket and into the room where you want her. get her scent onto the blanket first, that way she'll always return to her scent where she feels safe. good luck
