These are difficult to design and construct. Much easier to buy one, they are cheap. And that way you are guaranteed it will work.

The design involves a special transformer, high current devices, heat sinks, other issues.

You need to pick how many watts output, they vary from 100 watts to 5000 or more. And also can the output be a square wave, or do you want a sine wave output. Square wave is cheaper, but some appliances won't work with it.
