How can one spoiled fruit affect other fruit around it?

They give off something in the air, some sort of gas, and it causes them to go bad in the first place when they're in a bag given from the store. But if you see the green bags commercials, it shows proof that they let out the gas and they last longer. But if there's different kinds of fruits together, then they reflect the gases on each other, and it's like suffocating them.
