How can people be so ignorant?

This what I heard in class today:

Student: "Does the American HS diploma have more merit than HS diplomas in other countries?"

Teacher: "Oh, I don't know, but all the male exchange students seem to look down on women, that is just how it is in their society"

To quote the "great" Forrest Gump...."Stupid is as stupid does."  It must be in the genes, that is how "some" people get to be so ignorant....I deal with folks like that everyday, some in high positions....can you spell F R U S T R A T I N G ?

Ouch!  Do all the male exchange students come from one country, or exactly which society is she speaking of?  This doesn't sound like someone I would want teaching my kids.

Who are you calling ignorant?  The exchange students?  The teacher?

Without knowing the whole conversation, it's difficult to tell.  It seems as though these two statements have been taken out of context.

The teacher is correct, some societies have different cultural norms.  But I'm not sure how that answers the student's question.

I have to agree that this sounds like two different conversations...perhaps the teacher just didn't hear the question correctly...seems like a disconnected answer.

There seems to be a disconnect between those two comments.  Were they in separate conversations?  

I don't know anyone who values the American h.s. diploma over other countries.  With that said, in a lot of countries a free education isn't available to everyone.  So, the students who attend h.s. in other countries are more motivated than students here.

It is stereotyping for that teacher to say ALL the male exchange students...

Yeah, those comments are mutually exclusive.  What your view point is towards women from a certain society makes absolutely no difference in what kind of merit your high school diploma has.  The quality and rigor of the classes and graduation requirements determine that.  That is a rather silly comment made by the teacher.

Maybe they're not so ignorant.  Maybe the teacher has noticed that the male students behave that way.

I am amazed at how women are still undervalued.  You look at the sports pages.  Do you see much mention of women's sports?

No-Thing  is all.  What does this tell you about the teacher.

The HS diploma does not mean you are smart ; Only you finished prescribed class.
