  1. I would guess that it has to do with how the mind can only deal with wholes in terms of the perceptual field, not just parts. For instance, if we see four corners arranged like the corners of a sqaure, but no lines connecting them, we'd assume it is a square. The mind puts the pieces together. If this is the case, then parts (even if just bits and pieces) of the dream are probably things we've seen and remembered, and then the rest is filled in with imagination or other bits and pieces of things we have stored away.

  3. It's probably because our minds changes places and people we know into something different, just our imagination while we sleep, our mind probably mixes them up to make interesting, different results.
