  1. Wifi signals are extremely weak.  They may not know where you are exactly, but they'll certainly know that you're very close.  Like, next door.  Doesn't that narrow it down to 2, 3, maybe 4 places?

    On the other hand, I agree with your other respondents.  If they can't even secure their router, or even know they should, maybe they don't even care if you use it.

  2. There is no way for them to know where you are when you are using there connection. But like it was said before the range on home routers is very low so you would have to be close. The legality of it is still kinda of in the grey in most places sense the connection is open it mean there is no real exception of privacy but that doesn't mean it is legal (I like to be safe then sorry so i would recommend against this). Hardware (mac) addresses don't really mean much they can be changed. To answer you other question how do they know if you are using there connection, well you computer sends information to the internet and receives information from the internet so that means there is data coming from your computer to the router. That data that your computer send can be seen by anyone on that network with the right tools.

  3. no, they can't.

    they can't even put a password to their network, how much more chasing a free rider!

  4. They could set up an Audit. But most people dumb enough to leave their wirless networks unsecured, don't know how to do that..so i think it's safe to say that you're set

  5. well, if they see that ur connected to there wifi

    ~~~> u can only be as far as 100yards ish away cant you lol
    DONT even think of using mine.....i know slap-is and hong kong fu-ey moves lol
    HEE feckin HEE
  6. they can find you if your using there wifi since your MAC address is left in the AP's logs however not your physical address but I assume if they didnt put a password in the first place they wont know how to check the logs.
  7. While it's unlikely they'll find out, it's still a crime most places if you get caught.  Also, it could be a "honeypot" - someone who's leaving a connection open and hoping you use it so they can steal your information.
    Bottom line:
    Unless the owner of the wireless connection has granted you permission, DO NOT use their internet - whether or not it's secure.
