How can people who work minimum wage manage to afford a safe car that works? Wouldn't their entire paycheck go

  1. That just about sums it up, even the people I know who are making 10 to 12 dollars an hour are having a hard time making it these days.  How anyone making minimum wage can afford a car and anything else is beyond me.


  2. That's a myth.

    It does cost much more.  But we are far from paying so much that the cost of gas is equal to the money made at work.

    Let's the cost of gas is exactly $4. And the minimum wage is exactly $4 (for ease of calculation).  So people work about 8 hours per day.  So you have to burn 8 gallon PER DAY just to commute to work and back - to say that the cost of gas is equal to the money made at work..

Its impossible for a person working at minimum wage to survive even if they only pay the necessities.  A person would have to work over-time at that wage or have a spouse income to help or they receive public assistance.  If they did own a car the cost of gas, repairs, and insurance would be impossible to pay.
