Question:

How can raising water bills be justified?

for most of this year so far, britain has had heavy rain - and the last few years have seen flods so severe that thousands of people have been made homeless and are living in caravans. the torrential downpours should more than compensate for the odd week of sun. given that events have been called off, gardens destroyed, streets waterlogged and rivers burst their banks, surely a price cut is on the horizon, or at least a price freeze for the next few years, and any shortfalls be cleared by cutting bonuses for executives?

any water company complaining about scarceities must be guilty of chronic mismanagement.

  1. But they are guilty of mismanagement and of not doing enough repair work to old piping, hence there are too many leaks.  Water garnered by rainfall isnt as prolific as you would think.  Resevoirs are shrinking each year.  Water is becoming a precious commodity that too many people take for granted.  So couple that with poor management and its not hard to see why water companies are charging a fortune.

It might be a basic right but it seems to be a basic right that is owned by someone unfortunately!  They do have to pay for the filtering costs though, the supply chain costs and repair men and what have you - but its still scandously high for a basic need and right dont you think?

  2. No chance of any cuts or freezes, but you are right

  3. Why are there floods??

Because the old victorian drains and sewers are knackered.

    So what are they doing?

    Repairing and making new sewers.

So how do they pay for it?

    By putting up the prices.

That's why there are price rises.

You're not that clued up about business are you?

If we cut all the directors salaries to zero, how much money do you think that would save each bill payer??  0.01p

    WOW!!!!!

Also the price of water is not like the price of food, just because theres a lot of it around doesn't mean it gets cheaper!!!

  4. As with most large companies and sell commodities, they're in a strong position to almost be able to set their on prices, as the have little to no competition. This means executives of these companies can make huge mistakes without having to worry about losing money, as they can simply increase prices to cover their loses and keep share holders happy. On the other hand, even without this, the population in Britain is growing ever large, and new policies for clean drinking water are constantly being introduced, which also affect the cost of treating and delivery clean drinking water.
