I have to ride along a fairly busy blvd. to get to school. Should I wear some kind of gas mask? Are there non-creepy looking ones I can buy? Thanks.

  1. Some people do wear protection to keep small particulates from entering their airways.  A true gas mask would create a seal around your face.  Visual appearances aside, I think most cyclists would feel too warm and encumbered by wearing such a means of protection.

Choose an alternative route, especially if you're currently sharing the road with heavy commercial vehicles, buses, etc...

If you must travel any distance on high-traffic roadways, time your ride differently so you can avoid some of the heavy traffic.

Air quality suffers during hot weather.  During periods of unhealthy air quality, find an alternative to riding.

I find waiting at busy intersections to be the most aggravating.  Waiting for the light to change while an old delivery van pumps out its filth next to you isn't pleasant.  Timing your arrival at intersections helps.  If you can see from a distance that the light ahead just turned red, take your time rolling to it.

Roadways that are in breezy zones can be more comfortable.
