  1. it's deafening because with silence, you hear nothing, so your mind thinks of things that annoys you. especially memories that gave so much impact to you.

  6. It's just an expression to make a point that too much quietness can be so strange and disturbing, not relaxing.  It can be deafening in the sense that you can hear a pin drop, you can hear your heart beat and even the mutest sound can penetrate your consciousness.

    hearing nothing is not normal..unless your deaf.
