Are there any requirements aside from educational? I assume a bachelor's degree at least, but what field of study? Very grey area it seems like.

  1. Have played the game, or have relatives that have played before.

  2. Know the game and be inventively inventive

  3. It's about who you know.  Most coaching staffs are made up of people who have previously worked together.  It may be easier for former players to latch onto a staff, but it isn't impossible to a regular joe to do the same.  But you will have to work your way from pony league (pee-wee) to high school to all divisions of college football and then move up to the NFL.  Or you can be an unpaid intern with a team and learn the game then move up the coaching ladder that way.
