How can someone buy stock in the NYSE without a broker?

I was wondering how I could buy stock in the NYSE without a broker.

Many NYSE companies have DRIPs.  Some of them require that you already be a stockholder, but some of them will permit you to buy your initial stake by check, at the time you enroll in the DRIP.  With some DRIPs you pay no commission to buy, but most do charge a fee, but it's far less than you'd pay if you went through a broker.

This does not mean you have to use a stock broker since all major brokerage firms provide their clients with on-line services, including trading platforms, latest market & financial news and research.

Customer need to select the site that is best for them.  Traders have requirements in a site, while investors have other requirements.  

Although most sites are geared to general securities and commodities, however customers may have special needs for the types of products they trade, and the markets in which they trade.

It seems that the most popular firms for on-line investing all of which provide excellent platforms and services are; Scottrade; Chas.Schwab; TDAmeritrade; Fidelity; E-Trade and Thinkorswim

One important thing to remember when selecting a brokerage firm, cheapest is not always the best.

Why?  It's simple enough to set up an online account with TDAmeritrade or E-trade or one of those discount outfits.  They are brokers even if you don't sit down with them face-to-face (and even if you don't have to pay them an arm and a leg).

There are other alternatives that technically answer your question (DRIP plans, for example), but in most cases you should just open an online account.
