Im a part of an online networking chat group. I don't use my name and my ID doesn't have any association with my name, nicknames, my personal character or who I am at all. This person came over and called me by my ID name, how would they know? Can a background check or anything like that or a special computer program help in finding this info out?

  1. Is it linked to any other online aliases? If so its entirely possible they found out that way.

Otherwise they would have had to have seen you using the chat group, looked at your computers history or even are a member of the chat group themselves and worked out who you are by what you said and your online personality.

OR they could have an administrative role at the website(?) in question. Which would enable them to access your account and find out what email you used to sign up with, if that's even a requirement?

  2. There is a chance that someone could use your IP to hack your computer or if you'd publish your e-mail address. You should probably use an anti-spyware like AVG 8.0 free. It has everything you need for a save computer...

  3. With today's technology almost anything is possible.  If you are not using wireless and it is not secured there are ways for almost anyone to log in and see what websites you have visited.  If you are using a public computer or one from work where others have access so they could use a key logger to find out where you have been.  Your IP address also gives out information.  Basically, I would need a little more information as to your situation in order to best answer your question.  What type of online networking group it is, how you signed up, where you access the chat group, etc...  I tell clients all the time to be very careful of what they submit online because people get there information accessed frequently in a variety of ways.
