How can someone like someone they have never talked to before?

My friend likes this guy and she has never talked to him in her life, she has liked him for 4 years now. Everytime we get close to him she gets all worked up and starts panicing. How can she like him if he doesn't even know she exists? I mean I know you can think someone is hot and all but she is obsessed with him! He is all she talks about. But she will not talk to him no matter what. At least she said she would if he talked to her first but I still don't get how you like someone you haven't ever talked to. How exactly does that work? I have only liked 2 guys before. One guy I liked from Kindergarden - 5th grade. He was one of my friends. Then in the 6th grade I met a guy and eventually I liked him even more in the 7th grade and he became a good friend, then a crush. I have liked him from the 7th grade all the way to this current day (9th grade). But I still don't get it when I like a guy I have known them for at least a year.

She likes the way he looks. Maybe she watches or observes what he does, this gives her an idea of what he's like and I can understand how she won't talk to him unless he talks to her first. I think she likes him mainly on his looks or how he acts towards others.

its possible ; you can observe the way someone acts and what not and like them ive done it before and people like me too the same way. you have to like someone in order to even talk to them in that way. shes just shy. why are you so worried about her life anyway.and a year that doesnt make any sense ..why didnt you go out with him. im guessing you never had a boyfriend before. worry about your own life and stop judging other people when your in the same boat as she is.

She's probably just very attracted to him or intrigued by his mysterious-ness (since she doesn't know him). It's just a phase. When she finally gets the nerve to talk to him, she'll hate herself for liking him in the first place. Also, if he finds out, he'll probably think she's a stalker and ignore her.
