  1. She could be autistic. Lots of auties have got normal or higher IQs, and do well at school as a result. Example? Me. :)

  2. Your friend may have been given an evaluation/test by a school. All parents are involved with this evaluation when and if they feel this may be needed. The word mentally handicapped is not the proper word. ESE classes, teachers and programs can best be thought of as helping and helpers. When you wrote your friend does well at everything and you don't know what is the matter. It may be that your friends parents and or the school know otherwise. This is almost always a private matter. We all worry in times like this but your friend has a good friend,, you!

  3. Mentally handicapped may not be the right diagnostic term.  It sounds like the proper term that should have been used was Learning Disabled.  Learning Disabled students tend to be intellectually on the same level as other students but depending on the severity of the Learning Disability they may learn differently either in how or the amount of time it takes to process what is being learned.  It all depends on the source of the information that they are basing their statement on.

  4. Well there could be something in her background that gives her that distinction.

For instance...I have a friend who went to all the usual classes, she had to study really hard to keep up with the class. She was "slow" but, she could learn and unless you knew her background you might miss that she was "slow".

what had happened is that she had been deprived of Oxygen at birth and had some brain damage due to it. She will never be able to drive because, she cannot make decisions fast enough to be a good driver. She got good grades in shcool but, she did have to work harder than others.

So, there must be something that is not quite right in order for them to give her that label.

  5. ESE stands for Exceptional/Special Education.  It could be that she's not being moved for any deficiency, but because she's advanced.  Does the school have a Talented and Gifted program, or do they lump the advanced kids in the ESE group?
