Richard Gasquet has only one qtr final round this year

He has lost in 1st or 2nd round in 7 of 11 tournaments.

How can we actually believe in ATP rankings when we see this?

Can men's tennis be so dilluted that someone who never goes past the quarters can be ranked top 10?

  1. I agree with the answer of the second guy and I'd like to add that all the major points have been taken pretty much by the same guys this year: first Nadal then Djokovic then Federer, then Davydenko, then Ferer, then Roddick. The major tournaments those that give lots of points have been won by these people and other players have shared the minor ones between them. so while the top players have taken all the points and gotten away from everyone else, the other players haven moved that much.

  2. Gasquet had a really good run towards the second half of the year so he is not really defending any ranking points and is still picking up points.

If he continues his poor form then he will drop in the rankings dramatically in the coming months. He has Semi final Wimbledon points to defend etc.

  3. He still has a huge number of points to defend next week at Wimbledon.  He made the semifinals last year...and the way he's playing this year i wouldn't expect to find him anywhere near that round this time around.  He has to defend these points or he will for sure be out of the top ten.

  4. The numbers are the numbers. He is almost ready to loose #9 to Stan the Man Wawrinka which will be nice for Switzerland and Stan but Richard should fall below Andy Murray since Murray didn't play Wimbledon last year so has no points dropping off and Richard is loosing 450 as a Semi Finalist last year. So you get your wish. He is no longer in the Top 10 actually he will not be in the Top 20 ... how does #22 grab ya.  See how much impact a semi-final showing in a Grand Slam has on a I don't know about you but I find it dissappointing that someone with so much natural talent & good fundamentals can have so little drive & motivation.

  5. Because most of Gasquet's points came in the second half of 2007, and by most I mean his semifinal from Wimbledon.  If he doesn't match his semifinal this year, then he will take a dive in the rankings, which are based on a rolling 52-week period.  In terms of just the results from 2008, you have to look at the race points standings, and on that list Gasquet is #43.
