How can something break your heart and make you smile?

It read this text I am suppose to analyze, and this quote came up.

"Their memories will break your heart and make you smile."

What does that actually mean?

When I see a picture of someone I don't/can't see anymore and remember very fondly, it breaks my heart and makes me smile.
