  1. Think about things you might want to compare and that comparison could either make your life better or just fun.

For instance, if you kept stats on your spending, you might see you're spending too much on iTunes and not enough on education mags or your savings.

If you kept weekly stats on gas consumption and tried to get it to be lower, you might figure out how to combine errands to be more efficient and also end up with more free time plus money.

If you like sports, understanding how stats are used to judge and rate players would make you a more knowledgeable fans.

Suppose you had a pet and you wanted to teach it tricks or commands.  Suppose there were several techniques for each trick.  Keeping stats would tell you which technique works best, so you could use it with your other pets and it would save you time, and which tricks overall were easiest to teach and repeat.

1000s of ways we use stats every day.  These are just a sample to get you started.

  2. Lasso has said some good ideas. Other ones include:

data measurements at traffic lights to calculate how many cars go through each set of traffic lights within a given time, and thus the timing of traffic lights can be adjusted. Eg if at a cross roads there are lots of cars going from left to right and right to left, but not many going up to down and down to up, then the 'vertical' traffic lights dont need to be on as long as the 'horizontal' ones.

Sports tv broadcasters measuring how many people tune into a sports event on that channel, and at what times. The popularity of the show can be used in the future for pricing advertisement. Eg itv know that if there is a british team in a champions league final, the viewing figures will be x million more than usual, so they can charge £y more than they usually do. And they know that viewing figures peak during half time and the second half. So adverts BEFORE the game may not cost as much as half time adverts.

Supermarkets measuring how many people come into the shop at what times, and thus can employ the right number of till assistants and floor assistants. Eg sainsburys dont want to be employing 80 staff on a tuesday morning if only 40 will be needed. They want to save money any way they can.

Basically think of anything where numbers (times, number of people, number of trains etc) are collected and analysed.

    Good luck!
