A good inexpensive way to start is subscribe to some of the forward thinking magazines like Dwell, Domino, them maybe a couple of the more traditional minded ones like House Beautiful, and Veranda. You will find articles about famous designers, styles, trends, ideas,etc...but if you want to get serious about it, I suggest you also look to see what your community colleges offer and maybe the continuing ed classes at a local big univ.

You can take a class or two to see if you really want to move forward in this field. In the classes you will get info about measuring, estimating, time lines, the more nuts and bolts side of interior decoration. The real pros belong to a professional organization called ASID (and another who's name escapes me) . It is a badge of honor to be a member and means a lot to clients.

Usually a bit of artistic talent is a good thing. Not necessary but handy.
