  1. Go sit at the airport and watch the airplanes take off....

  2. question of speed. just like when you stick your umbrella out the window of a car when its standing still vs 60mph.

  3. even tho we consider the air around us to be pretty soft and thin, we can see how it's actually pretty dense when we see the 'drag' and the friction that comes when a plane, or shuttle or meteor comes thru it... if it's actually that dense, it's much like the water in the pond where we're skipping stones!...and we certainly see how 'thick' it is during a hurricane, when the movement of the atmosphere can push water around!!....and then there's those meteors that hit the atmosphere just right and skip instead of barrelling on thru and smacking Earth....... what's even more mind boggling is the fact that radio waves can 'skip' on the upper layers of the atmosphere instead of being lost into space, find themselves beaming to the other side of Earth!... talk to a Ham radio afficianado sometime....shoot, we could get 'skip' with CB radios!....

  4. People will bounce off your breath if you eat enough garlic.

  5. the first answerer is right in that it skips off the atmosphere like the surface of a pond, but also, you  are not breathing the atmosphere, the atmosphere is a mixture of gasses that are on the outer layer of the sky. the atmosphere is what holds in all the air we know and love. if you were up in the atmosphere you would not be able to breathe.

  6. Think about skipping stones on a calm pond.

If the stone is the right shape and you throw it the right way, it can skip off the water instead of plopping into it.

Same with the atmosphere - an object moving at the right speed and at the right angle could "skip" off the air instead of moving into the air.

  7. Sorry John...you're not quite right on that.

The atmosphere is part of the air you breathe. The atmosphere consists of every part of breathable air...right up to the edge of the outer layer several hundred miles up.

I also agree with the rock skipping off of the water analogy.....that is an accurate one.
