  1. Adsorption is the process of a material being bound to the surface of another material.  Like activated charcoal can remove pollutants because the pollutants become attracted to the surface of the charcoal.  This could be used to calculate the surface area if you had a very controlled environment and could dictate how much of a substance is being attracted to the other material.  If you can tell that a layer of water 1 micron thick is being attracted on a 1x1 mm peice of material then you can calculate the surface area...
