How can tarriffs on american made goods benefit maufacturers here? what are the disadvantages?

Tariffs raise the price of foreign goods.  If foreign goods are more expensive, that increased the demand for domestic goods.  Increased demand raises the price.  The disadvantage is that the consumer pays higher prices and gets less of a selection to choose from.
