tasmania has a population large enough to support 1 team especially if south australia can support 2 . tasmania defeated all south australia and western auttralia in ll grades in the 50,s and 60,s and still produces many talented players. if the government and the people are willing to back a team in tassie why wont the afl. surely this is in the best interests of a game that claims to be national

  1. It would be easy for commentators as there are only two or three different surnames in Tasmania.

  2. It will happen one day!!!

  3. One day it will happen, either the Hawks or the Saints will end up there.

  4. I agree it can't  be called a national game until tassie gets a birth. NT should have a team as well

  5. Studies have been done into this - Tassie does not have a large enough population to support an AFL team. Their population is not as large as you might think, have a look at this link  http://www.wilmap.com.au/ausfacts.html I know that data is a bit old, but you get the picture.

Also search YA for similar questions on this topic, it has been discussed a lot.

Edit - yeah chooka I agree, i would rather see a team in Tassie than West Sydney. Population is the only problem.

Yes they have produced some great players, but you need to fill stadiums to make a team viable.

  6. Yes I hope Tassie gets a team before Sydney getter another one, as they deserve it more than just a money grab that the AFL are after.

Where would you put the map of Tassie? On the jersey, oops sorry guernsey, or shorts.  Hmm, the shape of Tassie reminds me of something...?!  Yes, the shorts would be the best place!

  7. A relocated Melbourne team would be the best option.  Existing infrastructure, automatic following, with other Tasmanians to follow when they become moe successful and it is an AFL aligned state.

A much better move than Western Sydney or Gold Coast where they comete with the NRL

  8. i wish tassie had a team in the AFL

god knows they have given the AFL

    so many fantastic players

Peter hudson still holds the record

  9. Yeah I agree with Gavin. Tassie and NT should have a team.

  10. I would really hate the team of mine to have to relocate .. BUT you know .. It would be a little easier to bear .. if they relocated to Tassie .. because at least then they could be called the TASSIE DEVILS ... not too far from the melbourne Demons ..

BUT .. I hope that never happens .. would MUCH prefer to see the Melb. Dees stay where they are .. and Tassie have their OWN team :)

The AFL are big business .. they really only care about making profits....( least that's how I see it)

  11. Would they go to the games? My impression of watching cricket at Bellerieve Oval is that there are not as many people there as there should be. I don't think the finances would be there even if the passion was.

  12. Money.

  13. hmmm i see what your saying

but i just can't imagine their being a tazzie team......

  14. i disagree with richo, listen tiger mate, i really think it is a better option to make a team in tassie then one on the Goldy or western Sydney, the market is there already.

to the asker it has nothing to do with the players that come from there, its all about sustainability, can tassie sustain a club? i think yes and if not, what is the diff if its tassie who deserve a team or west bloody Sydney who couldn't give rats about 'our' game.

it also makes no diff if tassie beat SA or WA yesterday let alone the 50's, the players will come from every where, will Tasmanians support a team that has players from all over Australia, i think yes,in time.

why the afl continue to try to push game into places where they don't care is beyond me.

  15. Population is not the only issue. AFL mindedness is also important. Sure Sydney has 4 million people but most of them follow the boofhead game, whereas Tasmania (with its unique fauna, gorgeous landscapes, and clean air) dreams only of Aussie Rules. WA and SA are the same and the people who support Rugby in Victoria are only pathetic blow ins from the Argentinien states of NSW & QLD.

Teams on the Gold Coast and Western Sydney are an insult!
