the same way that the top trainer has never won the Derby...  its just how the sport is.  everyone has good years and bad years.

I don't know of any horses he has trained this year.

That's just the way it goes. Bob Baffert, Nick Zito and D.Wayne Lucas do not have any horses running either. The horses that make enough in graded stakes races qualify to run in the Derby. Kiaran McLaughlin is certainly one of the best trainers out there. It's still too early to tell what horses will be running in the Preakness or Belmont.
