  2. It has been proposed to divert water from the northern rivers or the Volga to feed the Aral Sea, but that will do nothing for the soil which is ruined by the vast saline underground pools. Some agriculture is possible by over-watering the land with clean water, and forcing the saline water down before seeding. But as soon as the watering stops after the harvest, the saline water again soaks the soil. What needs to be done is lowering, if not eliminating, the underground pools of polluted salt water.
