  1. Not with bylaws. The people should be able to throw away whatever they want wherever they want.

  2. It annoys me that our recycle program will only accept #1 and #2 plastics.  They CAN do a lot better. Rutgers (our state university) has developed many programs over the years. Also our county has very short and difficult times posted to collect HazMats like mercury bulbs, etc.

So, I think many people are trying to do what they can, and the local governments need to do more. If nothing else, the non-biodegradable solid waste can be used to produce energy ( http://www.covantaholding.com/ )

  3. Provide recycling bins at NO CHARGE...and trash pick up at NO CHARGE in exchange for sorting

  4. and there are people who want to and are not allowed to either, so something needs to change.

  5. Governments are not famous for their concerns about their countries ,

As far as the recycling is concerned i agree the local government must be pressurized in to providing different painted bins ,as they do in the village centers in the Netherlands ,one for white glass, one for colored glass ,plastic and one for organics,

And if the Government does not have recycling facilities ,perhaps they can be set up privately ,as happens in many places ,often their is Government assistance for initiating these businesses ,

personally i think we should boycott companies like Coca Cola to foot part of the bill after all a lot of the rubbish they have produced it may even be feasible if they recycled them selves

Here in Mexico they told us to take a hike ,but with organization it would be a big threat if a whole town refused to drink their stuff for a week ,it means thousands of dollars or more

    --------------------------------------...

    But about the organics

the people must get it together themselves

Governments have other priorities and they live somewhere else

i am sure around their homes the place is clean.

So it is up to the people to behave responsibly towards their OWN living conditions .

Why do people always lay the blame or responsibility at the feet of the government .like a big daddy .

Why not think big and say

what is GOD doing about it ?

why does he not say separate your garbage ,do not pollute.

I worked for an ecology department in Mexico ,and when we asked many times ,of the churches to include environmental responsibility in their preaching ,it was ignored

when we invited church leaders to our citizens meetings ,

    they refused to come .

their business is in life AFTER death .not before it .

Chief Seattle said over a 100 years ago ;those who sleep in their filth ,will die in it ,

So it is up to YOU each and everyone ,

not the government or anybody else

or the Chiefs prophesy will get you as well.

organic waste is responsible for 70% of the contamination of landfills, and it is the easiest to fix,.with composting

or if it is a lot such as with paper or saw dust ,use it for mulching.

    --------------------------------------...

        COMPOSTING AND MULCHING

COMPOSTING or decomposition is the natural process  that happens in Nature from which the soil is derived ,

for example a tree produces most of it own soil during its life time ,with the leaves its discards which fall on the ground ,and rots

the worms and the bugs eat it and their excrement is the black top soil mixed with other organic wastes

WE COPY THAT for composting or mulching

a compost heap is a good thing for a household because it accommodates organic wastes that other wise would have gone to land fills and 70 % of landfill pollution comes from organic wastes that people put in with their trash.

and the compost is useful t have in the garden for flower pot or the garden itself

        COMPOSTING

First of all we have to classify trash at least keep the organic to one side ,like in a plastic bin with a lid ,

the permanent stuff like glass plastics ,can go to the landfill or we make a hole of a few square meters and make our own landfill ,every so often cover with sand and compact it .

As long as the organics are gone the production of harmful bacteria is next to none ,

Only things like batteries are very bad in the soil.

Don`t burn it ,that is very bad for the air .

if you are in a apartment ,if you have a balcony get a big plastic bin drill some holes in the side and lid ,

and add a bit of sand now and again to put over the trash ,you should really stir or move the stuff at times to aerate it and ensure that the decomposition is overall ,keep moist

there are special compost bins you can get for apartments ,best to keep on the balcony where there is airflow.

        ------------------------------...

        a general note on compost

        bones,tree trunks,cardboard,egg... clothes(if they are organic),p**p,leaves,kitchen waste,food scraps,newspaper,

        kitty litter

All can be put on the compost heap

as long as you seal it with a covering of leaves .or put a piece of plastic on top ,

keep it moist and in the shade ,it will then get hot enough to kill all parasites

the worms will develop, and take care of everything ,the moisture helps decomposition

the plastic keeps in the moisture and protects the worms from predators .like chickens ,birds armadillos, and even dogs .i have seen going in to eat my worm culture

you could add a bit of lime now and again

to make the process more potent

        HOW

make the compost in a shallow hole ,so that it retains more humidity,

about 2 square meters is good ,and have it under a tree or put a little roof over i t,which does not have to be water proof ,so a palm thatch is enough,

and make sure the garden sprinkler gets there or spray some water on it ,at least once a week, don`t have it water logged or the worms will drown or leave

        RECYCLING

Cardboard is also acceptable for recycling

so is glass if you classify it in colors, and

        aluminum cans

        MULCHING

we cover the ground of our vegetable plot ,with a thick layer of organic material like leaves ,saw dust ,news paper .,the thicker the better the composting process will turn it in to black topsoil

Which is the same principal as composting but it includes the whole garden surface instead of in only the compost heap

The top part of the soil where the topsoil is being produced houses a world or micro biotic life.

The humidity is preserved underneath and promotes the development of worms(there exists no better compost than their excrements)and a variety of micro biotic life which together with the mulch produce more topsoil.

the mulch also keeps the ground temperature even and guards against the impact of the rain ,which would other wise brings salt to the surface if on unprotected land

Mulch also prevents the soil from drying out because of the sun and, lay it open to wind erosion.

  6. Tie recycling to an economic incentive, and punishment i for those who do not separate and recycle.

  7. hm.. give the citizens the incentive to recycle.

  8. Countries such as Germany are doing it, I don't see why the US is not. I guess we need political leaders with the smarts to implement the same type of program they have in Germany, where paper, plastic, and biodegradables are all separated and picked up and taken care of (recycled) by the gov.

    I'm still waiting.

  9. Because it is not necessary.  I throw all of my recyclable material (bio-degradeable and non-biodegradeable) into the same bin.  One a week, the recycling company comes by and picks it up and segregates it for me.  No fuss, no bother, easy to do, and everybody in my neighborhood does the same.

  10. if you segregate your trash, and recycle, you should get pickup at no fee, or at least a tax deduction

  11. In the city that I live in recycling pick up is included with your garbage pick up.  We get a bin for paper products and a bin for plastics, glass and metals.  So it is up to each person to do it, you pay for it either way (our total garbage pick up fee is something like $10 a month).  However, if you live in an apartment you do not have this option, it is only for houses that the garbage pick up goes to.  It is also only in city limits, so people who live on the outskirts just outside of city limits do not have this option.

They should live w/in the city limits anyway to help reduce urban sprawl, but that is a whole other topic.

  12. Well for those of us who pay the garbage bills, the rising cost of getting rid of it will cause the general public to recycle.  I do and have always done it.

But as long as those who are too lazy to do it, well they will just pay more $$ for the convenience
