how the graph pf x=y^2+8y+7 can be obtained from the graph of x=y^2

  1. y^2+8y+7=y^2+8y+16 -9

           =>   x=(y+4)^2 - 9

    =>x+9=(y+4)^2

    therfore shift graph by 9 units RIGHT to compensate for x and 4 units DOWN for 5 so that vertex is at(-9,-4)


  2. First you must complete the square. To do that just add and subtract 16 at right side .

    x = y^2 +8y + 16 - 16 + 7 and get   x = y^2 + 8y + 16 -9 ==>

    x = (y+4)^2 - 9

    Now you take the graph of x = y^2  and put it down 4 units in y axis... because of  y+4    and  put it 9 units left in x axis because of  -9
