How can the recycling process be contaminated?

I'm more concerned about the recycling of plastics. But any info will help. =)

  1. When toxic substances are put into materials that are being recycled, contamination will occur. Some substances give off dangerous gases, and liquids that can ooze into otherwise nontoxic recycling and render it dangerous.

    Radioactive materials, pesticides, batteries, old computers, old motor oil, chemicals, pharmaseuticals, and medical wastes are some dangerous contaminents that make their way into waterways and landfills.

    Always dispose of toxic substances properly. Call you city utilities for information about proper disposal.

    Remember, things don't stay put - - - they move into other areas and can cause serious problems to living things.


  2. Old plastics can form this chemical. Lots of bottles from water so this is recycled and used in water bottles, and it gets bad.
