I have been looking all over for a used car online or on the lots, and I have come across a lot of 2008 models. My question is how can that be? What makes this car used? Like, did someone drive it and then decided they didn't want it anymore or what? Were these tester cars on the lots or something? I would like a full answer, explaining any or all possibiites, please.

  1. These are short term lease and rental cars. Rental companies only keep a car to 14,000 miles and trade it in. And corperate lease cars are only leased 6 months to a year. Good part is the cars are still under warrenty and you can save up to 12 grand

while getting new car financing rates.

  2. Somebody bought it and immediately decided to sell it (moving, etc.)  If it was a tester car, it would still be considered new (because it was never titled)

If you read the questions (here) you will find there are lot of flakes who buys the car and even just days later change their mind. So, you can imagine some of them will actual go ahead and try to sell it for some loss.

    Good Luck...

  3. Good question! First, we have to consider that a 2008 model was actually put out in 2007.  There are many reasons for them to be used.

-Test drive model that a dealership has put up for sale.

    -A car rental company

    -Short term leases

    -Repo's

-May have been in an accident

  4. There are a couple possibilities I can think of. I have a good friend who's a saleswoman at a dealership. She's been driving around in a sporty little red thing I've had my eye on. It's a 2008, with only about 2000 miles on it. Yes, it is for sale as a "used" car. Other possible scenarios are that the car could be a repo. Many years ago, I voluntarily turned a vehicle in when I could not make the payments. It was only a few months old.  And then, some people trade cars like they change their clothing. My brother trades his vehicle at least every year. Not sure why, but apparently he can afford it. Actually, now that some of the 2009 models are out, a 2008 is considered "used" unless it has nearly "zero" miles on it. Now and the next month or two will be a good time to find some bargains on the '08s.

  5. New car years come out about 6 months before the year.  Hence 2009 models are out for a lot of makes now.  Therefore a lot of 2008 models are already a year old.  Therefore they are used.

Other reasons are what people have mentioned.  Someone buys a car and they don't want it after a few months.  Once a car has been titled, even if driven 10 miles, its used.

A rental car company buys new cars and sells them after a year or two, hence a year old car now can be an 08.

Someone buys a car and loses their job, or really can't make the payments, same as the first example, even if only driver 10 miles, its used and its still technically new.

And it if was in an accident, and totaled and repaired to sell.  You will find a new car that is for sell used.

  6. Different reasons

    - financial crisis

    - personal taste

    - moving

    - big car or too small car

    - problematic one

    - accident
