You know how randomly during football matches on TV they show statistics? Well sometimes they show the distance a player has run during the game. How do they measure that?

  1. if you are talking about American football it's easy.the run is started at the line of scrimmage,or where the ball is placed on the field after a play. the players run is started when he receives the ball(in the case of a running back, etc,or other backfield play like a hand -off)all movement before the reception is not counted, until he crosses the line of scrimmage

  2. Summary: In this work, we consider the problem of tracking soccer players during a game by using multiple cameras. The main goal consists in finding the position of the players on the pitch at each instance of time. The occlusion is treated by splitting segmented blobs and the tracking is performed using a graph representation, where nodes correspond to the blobs obtained by image segmentation and edges represent the distance between the blobs.

So they use a graph to measure the players.

And different camera angles to locate the distance

  4. Stadiums and clubs install a number of networked video cameras which are positioned around the pitch. They then use extremely sophisticated video processing software which monitors the players and this is what calculates the distance they have covered and the other statistics which they show on screen.
