  1. The best way to tell is by looking at young koi.  Mature koi are very easy to s*x.  Males even at a very small age are thinner or sleaker than the females and are more agressive.  Move quickly with jerky movements.  females are usually more fuller bodied and if the fish are all the same age, the larger ones are more than likely females. If your fish are larger, you can always lift them up and gently squeeze their abdomen.  Milt will slowly trickle out of the males.

When keeping koi always keep one male to every 5 females.  Keep a well planted pond with a fountain or a waterfall.

Don't forget to feed your fish green veggies, squash and fruits.

  2. You will only be able to tell the sexes after the fish passes 12 inches in length. Until then, your guess would be as good as mine.

Since both sexes have the "moustache", and both sexes are equally colorful, curious and social... the only way to tell is to look at them from the top. The males are a very narrow body, thin from nose to tail. Females hold eggs in their bodies, near the ventral fins, so you will see a "bulge" and fatter appearance in the ladies.
