How can u test a starter on a out board motor?

it is a 40 hp mercary. it would spen and now it just cliks

Sorry, I need more information.  What manufacture, what size, and what year would be a good place to start. Ok, so a 40 merc, electric start, the starter spun, but did not engage?  Is that correct? Now, it just clicks?  OK, do this.  Check the battery, make sure it is fully charged, then re-try the starter.  If it still does not engage and turn the engine over, you have a problem with the solenoid or the starter, or both.  Pull the starter, have it rebuilt, replace the solenoid, should be back in business. This can ruin a trip, don't try to cut corners.
