How can we be sure of electricity meter ?

i have a doubt that the electricity meter at my house is not working properly. how can i check whether it gives the correct reading when we are using it ? is there a way to measure, or we just have to take their word....

There is a product on the market called cent-a-meter and when installed correctly it calculates the amount of electricity used, by cost in cent value and watts usage.Then you can compare your readings with the Electrical companies bill and will also let you know how well your Electrical meter is working. you can ck it each thing you use tell you  get a read out from your power company .EX: stove,refrig,dryer computer now unplug one thing for few mins (unplug because even off they use power) now go to the list power company gave you see how much it should use then plug it back but as you do have someone else at the meter .let that person know just when you do it( now meters read right to left .)in just a few seconds it well show on meter then unplug it again . then you can also let them come out and they will do the same thing. you should always take the numbers off your meter and compair them with your bill reading each month.to do that if thy still come to read the meter go look at it the same time they do write it down see if that's whats on you bill. if you have the newer ones ask when the get the reading and just look at it and ck # they will give you a day not the hour. we have found many times in just 1 yr where numbers did not mach and we called them on it and our bills was adjusted one time it was$ 70.00 . hope this helps

In most states you can call the power company and they will come out and recalibrate the meter if it needs it for free...In Texas they allow this only once a year for free..call your local pwer company and that is the term"calibration" and ask if the service is free for a 1 time thing...
