  1. What's the subject? There are always ways to spark interest, but would need to know the subject.

  2. What grade level and subject matter is this geared?

Generally speaking, there are several ways to engage students at the beginning of lessons. You could open with a mini-version of a game to perk their interest in which you introduce the topic. You could play "Guess?" This is where I give my students hints about today's lesson, and they try to guess what they are going to learn. Sometimes I also like to write the main word connected to what they are going to learn on the board. However, I will only write it one letter at a time, and students are free to shout out what they think they are going to learn. Activate prior knowledge. Another wards, connect it to something the students already know. It serves as a bridge of sorts. Start with an interesting experiment or something that is sure to "confuse" students. Basically, they're expecting one thing to happen, but something else happens. It is during this state of "confusion" that students are primed to soak in new learning.

These are only a few of the ways you can engage students. A version of "Are you smarter than a ..." would also work. Hope this helps and good luck!
