  1. How about the "World's Cleanest Car"

"BBC News is reporting that a French company has developed a pollution-free car which runs on compressed air. India's Tata Motors has the car under production and it may be on sale in Europe and India by the end of the year.

The air car, also known as the Mini-CAT or City Cat, can be refueled in minutes from an air compressor at specially equipped gas stations and can go 200 km on a 1.5 euro fill-up -- roughly 125 miles for $3. The top speed will be almost 70 mph and the cost of the vehicle as low as $7000."

  2. Smog (a portmandeau of 'smoke' and 'fog') is caused by particulate matter in the atmosphere, under certain conditions (the same ones that often result in fog)  The key to reducing smog is to reduce the amount of such matter going into the air.  The biggest culprits are coal burning power plants and motor vehicles.  Both release sulphur dioxide in addition to soot.  Both of these can be (and increasingly are) controlled by maintaining the quality of the fuel (witness the ultra low sulphur diesel required today in the US) and by scrubbing the exhausts of these devices (equipment on smokestacks or your car's catalytic converter).

There's another class of smog, called photochemical fog, caused by the reaction of Nitrogen Oxides with sunlight.  These too can be controlled by controlling the pollution by these compounds (harder to do since burning things at high temperatures usually produces them).

It should be important to note that ome areas are also naturaly smoggy.  The Los Angeles basin would be smoggy even if nobody lived there, as the weather conditions, combined with the dustyness of the arid terrain create natural smog.  The fact that LA has so many people and cars, combined with the above mentioned weather conditions, is why it is particularly smoggy.
