Im chinese, and you know how much fish means to asians, who have been living off fish since they could fish(for their nutrients of course, at the time...), and one day i tried to tell my parents about overfishing..they looked at me and said the sea will never run out of fish...Well unfortunately, probably contrary to popular belief, fish are being fished to extinction. There are over 6.5 billion people in the world, and maybe at least 3-4 billion people rely on fish. How can we get the world out to all these people, expecially Japan, who slaughters fish and even dolphines? Can we get people, expecially in asian, to chance their traditions and cultures of relying on fish? They gotta understand it would be better for humanity and the earth if we let the sea replenish itself, and the sea does not have an unlimited supply of resources. This is just as important as fossil fuels and forests. For the sake of future generations, can we get people to be more aware of overfishing?

  1. Thats why we have a restriction on how much of each kind we can catch.

  2. Well first, talk about bycatch.  Bycatch is when fishermen either fish excess fish, or fish species that they didn't need to fish, then just throw the dead fish back into the water.  Then you can talk about the reproduction of certain species, and how we are fishing so much that the species can't replenish themselves.  Also, talk about how people usually fish the larger, older individuals, leaving fish that are too young to breed.  Connect this all, and eventually the oceans will run out of fish.  About dolphins, that is a malpractice.  Whaling is banned, and it is wrong.

  3. To those who say financial will limit the fishing as the fish populations decline: This is nowhere near true. The factors that drives fishing, and even the finances of it, is that people are trying to survive. They can't just stop fishing because they would starve. Thus, a decline in fish will not lead to a reduction in fishing. Too many people are dependent on them.

    *People have to eat.

*People have to make money (most of them), and they do so by selling fish.

These two factors will kep the fishing going. Currently, 29% of the edible fish and seafood species have declined with 90%. If the current trends continue, all fish, and seafood, species will collapse by 2048*

*According to a study by Palumbi and Worms, financed by the National Science Foundation.

  4. saying the world will run out of fish is like saying the world will run out of cows because we eat too many of them. If there are less fish the price at restaruants will go up and less people will eat fish its not like they are all going to have a steep drop in numbers overnight.
