How can we make a difference in a state custody "unwanted" disabled child's life?

This is a question inspired by a contact of mine on Y/A. It is also a personal issue I have dealt with here in the United States. Unfortunately, this child that was born with cerebral palsy died 2 years ago.

I was moved after visiting this wonderful boy in a nursing home 8 years ago. I was moved to want to make a difference. His name was Antonio, he was my unwanted brother in law -given to the state. What my mother in law did to this child is nothing I want to even give 10 seconds more of the time I just did.

I'm asking this question to raise awareness of a situation going on right under our noses. There are many children in the United States with out homes, who will likely die in a nursing home, institution with out ever knowing a mother's love, a friends warm embrace.

Antonio only lived for a short 16 years. As my husband and I made the necessary steps to adopt such a blessing, the Lord called him to be with His family.

Antonio died alone. Before we took initiative in his life, the only places he had ever been was to school. He was not alone in that nursing home. There were many children with not families, no where to call home.

How can we as human beings--show our love? Can we leave this earth a little bit better than we came in it. Can we make a difference in someone else's life?

  2. Good stuff!! Do you have any links to organizations that can connect people to local homes where these children would be? Would one check with the local hospital?

  3. These children touch my heart. I have two adopted children with Cerebral Palsy. And I have fostered so many others who are handicapped. All are a blessing in my life. I do not understand how anyone can throw them away or not care.

  4. Every child that is conceived is a true gift from God to this world.  Thank you for reminding us that God has a plan for every life.
