  1. Re-polish it

  2. If accidental contact does occur rinse immediately and soak in ammonia or soda bicarb solution.

Soak the object to be cleaned in the soapy water. If you are cleaning something small, such as a stainless pan, you can soak it to help remove burnt-on food or other stains if necessary. For really tough jobs, soak overnight.

If the damage has been caused by acid, this means that the material has been attacked and eaten away on the surface, not just stained. You therefore have two options:

If the sink is not highly polished, you could use steel wool to remove the damaged areas. This might cause further damage on polished metal though.

Otherwise, I would recomend using a metal restoring paint (ask at your local hardware store). In our labs, we use Hammerite paint to resurface damaged steel sinks.

If you have problems with limescale build-up again, you might want to use vinegar to remove it: vinegar's a strong enough acid to remove scale, but is less likely to attack steel.

    Hope this helps.

    Barry

  9. Steel does not only stain it can have incurable rust spots. But stainless steel is altogether another matter. Its staining may either be superficial that could be restored by sanding and buffing; acid stains can cause etching. Whereas 316 SS stainless steel is very good for most applications, it has adverse effects when used in a chlorinated environment like salt water etc. 18/8 stainless steel is commonly used in utensils. 304 stainless steel is used in welded products.

Next time read it carefully if it is stainless steel or plated steel that could have nickel or chromium plating only, that would tend to wear out with time and usage, depending upon the thickness and quality of coating.
