  1. Water absorbs some light, so it can appear darker than the background. It can also reflect and refract light, apeparing lighter than the background.  


  2. There are lots of answers to this:

    -The rain still reflects light.

    -Light travelling through water will diffract (bend) when it goes back to air.

    -Water is not perfectly colourless. If you get enough of it in one place you will not be able to see right through it.

    -Rain is not pure water, it has small amounts of other things mixed in.

    Water diffracts and reflects light, it can even cast a shadow.
