How can we spend our econ. stimulus checks as intended if they go in the gas tank to get us there?

The President asks that we help the economy through spending but the money goes into the gas tank because gas is so expensive. I do not shop because I don't want to pay for gas. Gas prices are KILLING our economy and the exiting President doesn't step in to correct it. The only stimulus I can find here is the one in the President's pocket. I was told that he has special interest in gas prices going up since he gets paid in this way, too. Where is our protection from price gouging? The price of a barrel of oil goes down but our gas prices jump ten cents per gallon. When will it peak? Is there a peak? When does the government say enough is enough? Or is it the culprit here?
