How can we tell if the odds are insurmountable or not?

Only after trying.  Failure can be a positive thing, too.

The only way to tell is to give an all out effort to overcoming the odds.  If you fail then the odds were insurmountable for you at that time.  If you succeed then they were not insurmountable.  Total effort is required, however.  If you give no effort the odds are insurmountable by default.  If you half *** it then they might have been, but might not have been.  Insurmountable simply means that you are unable to overcome them.  And the only way to find out for certain is to try as hard as possible.  Only that will tell you.
