I am building a Joomla! site and am trying to upload Apache 2.2.9 to the E drive of the server so that I can upload Joomla!. I accessed the server through RDP but cannot get online. How can I get online with server using RDP or transfer files from my computer?

  1. I would (and do regularly) just download the file directly from Apache's site to the server.  Why effectively double the download time (Apache to you, you to the RDC server)?  Forget the computer you're sitting at - RDC lets you "be there", so be there.

  2. I think you have define what On-line means, obviously if you can connect to the server than you are online.  Do you mean you can't bring up a web page on your computer?

If you are using a VPN connection to the server then all of your outgoing traffic could be set to forward to the server which would make it impossible to bring up web pages on your computer while connected with the VPN.

If you meant that you cannot bring up web pages from the server, it would probably be a system setting messing it up, in that case you would need to talk to the administrator.

  3. You can connect to the server through remote desktop but can't get online?

If you are connecting over the internet (as opposed to a lan) and the internet isn't working-My first guess would be a browser security problem. try opening a cmd prompt (start->run>cmd) and typing:

    ping google.com.

If you get a response then the internet should work and you may just have to lower your browser security settings on the server.

If you dont get a response it is likely a firewall problem somewhere... but that you will have to take up with the network admins.

If it's a computer on the lan and it doesn't have internet access and it needs it... then you'll have to troubleshoot that problem... again you can test with the ping method (browser security might still be an issue... i remember having to mess with it to install apache on a windows server.

If you cant get hose to work Windows server comes with an FTP server that you can setup and enable which will allow you to use something like filezilla, smartftp, or windows explorer to transfer files to the server harddrive which you can then run through Remote Desktop.

(not actually sure what you mean by 'online' but I'll guess it means for the world wide web)

  4. Well you can transfer files from your computer to an RDP'd computer by sharing disk drive resources in XP or enabling clipboard sharing for the RDP connection in Vista  (settings of the RDP connection).  Then you can do a copy and paste across RDP

Not sure how to address the rest of your question
