How can you become a voice actor?

I'm 13 and I really, REALLY want to be a voice actor. ><

I've always loved reading books out loud and giving stories and words a voice. In fact, I'm reading this out loud as I type, and I'll probably continue reading this out loud until I'm satisfied with every last detail and word of this paragraph! I just don't know how! How do you know if shows or video games are requesting voice actors? Do they have to ask you, or do you have to audition? I know it's an extremely competitive field, and I understand that. I just really want to try this. :]

So what could I do? D:

  1. Make a demo of yourself! Get a good-quality microphone for your computer, and record yourself saying 3 different types of commercials [that you wrote for copyright purposes] or anything general. Then you can start small, and call businesses + ask for the art department. Then tell them you're a fresh voice looking to be a voiceover in an upcoming commercial of theirs and if there is any way you could send a cd with your demo, or an email to send it to. You won't get cartoon characters just yet. Build up your credits with commercials. Send emails with your demo attached to potential clients, with contact information.

    Good Luck

  2. i want to be an actor too so i would just go out there and audition and before you start, ask if they want voice actors.

  3. Why just a voice actor? Expand. Get a role as an actor. Get your foot in the door, then start searching for voice auditions. If you are determined to just do voice auditions only, go for it and do not give up. You might find it fun to participate in acting and voice acting. Be versatile. You will get more offers if you are flexible with your acting roles.

  4. Voice acting is just like any other type of entertainment career. The highest profile people have booking agents who work to get them jobs in return for a percentage of the payment. However, many voiceover artists who are just starting out must also be their own promoter.

But before you start looking for that first job, you must build your craft. Community theater troupes and school drama and public speaking classes are as good a start as any.

Practice in front of friends and family members, and record yourself reading different kinds of material. Notice how the way you sound on the recording may not be the way you heard yourself while you were performing.

When you're confident you're ready for that first gig, I would start by visiting local talent agencies. In many small markets radio stations who produce their own commercials may be willing to give you a shot.

Try to make good local connections. You won't be getting calls from TV studios or video game designers right away, so you'll need to be willing to work with the people who work in the area you're in.

Be persistent. You will get turned down. A lot. You may even have to do several jobs for free before anyone will even think about paying you. If you do a good job, as the people you work with become more familiar with you, they'll recommend you to others. If you work hard, it can only grow from there.

  5. You should watch some of the anime convention voice actor panels on youtube. Despite the silly humor from the crazed anime fans, they're very thorough and informative when it comes to things such as that.

  6. You will need an Agent. They use voices for narrating all kinds of things and agents are used in the same capacity that movie stars use them.

You could try to contact a professor at a college where they have theater classes. At least it is a start....

    Good Luck with your aspirations
