  1. This is tough for anyone. The best thing you can do is to reassure her of your friendship. Be kind and affectionate. Hug her or hold her hand when she is sad. Listen to her lamentations patiently. Be available.

  2. Don't be hard on yourself, its difficult for anyone to console someone in this kind of situation.

I would find some positive feed backs of parents who have been in a similar situation on the web or something and then print them out and go to my friends place with her favorite dessert or ice cream and show her that there is hope.

  3. Firstly, I'll start by saying that you come across as a really considerate and kind friend, exactly what your friend needs right now.  The main thing you can do is be there for her.  Sometimes when someone is going through a hard time some people pull back from them, saying that they don't know what to do or say.  When often just being there and listening can be of immense help.

Reassure your friend that you're there for her (if she wants to talk) and tell her that if she needs any help with anything feel free to ask you.  I would call her regularly, as sometimes the person going through a difficult time can find it hard to call friends and ask for help.

I hope your friend's baby gets the all clear.
