How can you create your own board game?

Question

I would like to create my own unique board game, but I'm finding it hard to think of something unique without using ideas from games already created. Does anyone have any websites I could use to help me plan my game, or ideas on how I could think up something cool?

I have no idea what website is helpful but me & 3 of my friends made a game called "The Royal Flush". It was really fun making it, it took about 1- 1 & 1/2 months.

With the enormous range of games now in existence out there you may find it difficult to make something totally unique but sites like boardgamegeek.com define games by main mechanics and themes etc.  Referring to these and exploring it's database may be of help in trying out designs etc.  Have fun with your design.
