My chinese algae eater was swimming on its side and stopped right in the water. After a while the fish swam with lots of energy then it stopped again. It died the next day. Maybe it is swim bladder or lack of oxygen. Also when should you change the filter material?

  1. I'm afraid it's very hard to cure swim bladder, but don't lose hope, there are some things you can do, here is what to do!

take the sick fish out of the tank and place it in a small container (depending on how big the fish is) with some aquarium water in it,

keep the water as low as possible (this is so the fish can't bounce around

in the tank and hurt its self) then you should add some aquarium salt, this will help treat the problem, and if it dose ok feed it on a diet of frozen brine

shrimp (because this is very good for swim bladder problems, and for other types of sickness.

monitor it over a period of weeks and if it starts to recover you no you are doing the right thing, and so you can place it back in the tank

    Good luck!
