  1. Pull the student aside and take some time to really get to know this student.  Have a conversation with him or her and ask a lot of questions.  I've noticed if you treat young children with respect, as you would adults, it really goes a long way and opens up the relationship allowing you to be a more effective teacher and communicator.

If a student has frequent outbursts in class, you need to understand why.  I've had students with severe mental illnesses which cause the outbursts.  If it is just rudeness, then you need to  be quite strict in managing the outbursts, but if there is something seriously wrong, then you have to work with them gently to make them feel part of the class while making it clear that the outburst is not the way to get what they want.
